How We Built a Real Lightsaber
Get started in Onshape for free here: Onshape.pro/HeroTech
We built a real extending and retracting lightsaber from Star Wars! Finished just in time for the Acolyte, I'm so glad I can finally share Project JEDI with everyone. The lightsaber project files, links, and tutorials can be found below:
DISCLAIMER: This lightsaber is a prototype and is potentially dangerous to DIY. While I'm working to change that, I can't currently recommend this for anyone without engineering expertise and the will to troubleshoot for hours.

    Sssoooo… You folks have 311k worth of subscribers. Unless you all are grossly mishandling your money from all of your many different streams of income, my guess is that you can pool enough money together, to fight Disney on this, in court, should it ever come down to that. If I were you, I would be careful. It’s very difficult to decide what is morally right, here. Disney bought the d*mned thing from George Lucas, who, apparently, loved fan fiction. My guess is that he wouldn’t mind your project and would probably even embrace it. This might be great fodder for you to use, in a court argument. Be very careful. Do your research. If it were me, and I went this far, I would keep at it, until Disney said something. Disney has, quite literally, nearly endless streams of income. For any kind of potential argument that would talk about damages, Disney can suck it. What, exactly, are you damaging, when you compare numbers? These small cases that Disney likes to go after are dumb and petty, in the grand scheme of their tremendous empire. Someone like Universal stealing content - okay. You have a case. But this? It’s ridiculous. Good luck. Amazing product! 😃

    • @herotech
      @herotech День тому

      Thank you for the breakdown and kind words! We aren’t planning to sell this, hopefully that lets us avoid a lot of legal trouble with Disney. Our hope is that one day we could possibly even collaborate with them on this - it’s obviously something a lot of the fans want, and they have incredibly talented engineers themselves: this could be an opportunity for Disney and the fan base to come together and make something really cool collaboratively. Could be a pipe dream though :) until then, we’ll keep improving this design 🥳

    Spinning the blade is a brilliant idea, and would replicate how the saber looked like in ANH more than anything. The original lightsaber prop was a spinning rod of reflective projection screen material that bounced the stage lights making the bright shimmering blade.

    Very cool Some ideas on cheaper simpler design Skip the motor, use a wind up retraction spring Use button brakes like on tape measure to release extension and retraction Wind up can be anything but I think fastest would be a rip cord, 1 to 3 feet long, pull a few times to wind up retraction spring You could also make a wind up base, eg attach a handle rip cord winder thingy Also I think springs could be much quieter And on extension you would only have the cane pushing up so practically silent, Retracting the cane I imagine people would be more ok with noise For a super simple design you just throw a string in for controlled brake extension, put a weak spring on string to keep it tidy And users manually press cane into handle For lights over heating you could program them to light up as they extend, once they are spread out and in the air they should dissipate much better, and could save some battery life , Also you could make cool flicker effects turning off some LEDs along the blade For stronger blades , You could over lap multiple canes or Find manufacturer that can make stronger, thicker material, or wider material

    • @herotech
      @herotech День тому

    This is a cool design and a great effort. But I do think that the best way to build this is using the dual "tape measure" design that Disney did for the theme parks. It just uses two recoiled electro-illuminescent measuring tapes with motors that retract them out. Because each one is cupped like half a dome, combined together they make a full circle with no gap. Plus it's extremely sturdy and can even take a few light wacks.

    • @herotech
      @herotech День тому

      Yeah they have a cool design! I think their design may have slight issues with structural integrity, with the tape measure blade being a bistable structure and the necessity of using a plastic for the material (for it to be see-through) there's a limit to how sturdy/rigid they can make it. I could totally be wrong though! I would love to see footage of Disney dueling with their version or swinging it around, that would be so cool.

    This is awesome... Honestly, besides the dark saber effect, the only downside i see is the sounds of the retracting blade motor. Is there any way to fix that or is that beyond tech capabilities rn lol?

    • @herotech
      @herotech 2 дні тому

      Thank you! Yeah the sound is quite loud, we are switching to a different higher power motor which should hopefully help, we are pushing the current motor to its absolute limits which isn’t helping with the sound. We also plan to increase the speaker volume output so that the lightsaber sounds are more audible over the motor and can help mask it haha
